Litter Control

Litter Control Officer - Darrell Banks

Prevents littering in Letcher County. Works to have everyone in the county keep the garbage cleaned up around their homes. A person is guilty of littering when he/she places or throws litter on any public or private property.

Department Notice:

   It shall be unlawful for any person to permit litter to escape from their property or vehicle onto the property of or onto any roadway, waterway, park or any other publicly owned or possessed property.

    It shall be unlawful for any person to maintain on their property, within sight of a public roadway, highway or passageway a litter pile consisting of trash, paper, waste material, glass, cans, or any combination thereof.

Coordinates with local, state and federal autorities in the event of disasters, manmade or natural. Conducts trainings to  assist local responders with incidents involving public health & safety. Conducts joint training and exercises with local responders on natural disasters and local emergencies.

Haz-Mat 10

Hazardous Materials Response Unit

Responds to all Hazardous Materials incidents for the prupose of containment of materials that may pose a threat to health or property. Haz-Mat 10 is staffed with volunteers from different fire departments in Letcher County who have taken extensive training to be recognized as Hazardous Materials Technicians and are certified and qualified to respond to any Hazardous Materials incident. It was originally formed as the Regional Response Team in 2005.

Threat or actual release of a Hazardous Material should be reported through 911 or local fire department.

A Hazardous Material is any substance that has a potential, when released, to cause harm to the health of people, harm the environment or damage property.

Pine Mountain Search & Rescue

Ground search & rescue unit made up of volunteers from Fire Departments, ATV riders, horse riders, local sportsmen and hikers. Unit aids local volunteer fire departments to conduct searches for persons such as hikers, children and elderly people. Also conducts search & rescue for ATV riders who may be lost or injured in ATV riding accidents.
